Skepticism isn’t one of my better traits. When someone heaps even the slightest bit of praise my way, I tend to laugh and shrug it off with casual “thank you” and try to quickly move to another topic. I don’t suffer from any social anxiety disorder, but accepting a compliment isn’t something I’m too comfortable with. I can’t necessarily pinpoint the exact reason why either, but possibly it has something to do with my typically nonchalant attitude that whatever earned me that praise wasn’t all that difficult.

I’ve received compliments both in my personal and professional life, but lately I’ve been getting more and more about being a ‘great dad.’ Do I truly believe that I am a ‘great dad’? Absolutely not. I have way more fears and imperfections in my style than I’d ever care to express. I worry every day that I won’t do a good enough job raising Austin to be a better man than I, someone with higher aspirations than even I have.

This isn’t to belittle the compliments received, but the jury is still out about whether or not I’m a great dad. Do I think I’m a good dad? Yes. But I also don’t think it is too hard to be a good dad. Doing the stuff that every dad should do doesn’t deserve its own praise. You’re supposed to do provide for your children, lead them in a respectable manner and generally mold them into decent human beings.

My boy is a very good boy, a well-manned child that doesn’t need a lot of ‘work’ to take care of. Does that make me a great dad? Maybe it does, but you don’t have to tell me that.
